VA Senior Open 2019

BRIEF REVIEW: Below are the results from the VA Senior Open tournament held in 2019. We stayed at the same venue this year and everyone raved about the hotel (Marriott Residence Inn - Ballston) and the location in Ballston, VA - just outside of Washington, DC. The format was 5 rounds over 3 days each at a G/120, d5 time control. THis year no side events were held. Results are posted below.

The top Virginian of the VA Senior Open also won a free entry into the 3rd annual National Senior Tournament of Champions as Virginia's representative. The National Senior tournament is a USCF invitational for the senior champions from each state. This national tournament is a 6 round event held just prior to and in the same venue as the US Open chess tournament. Due to the COVID pandemic, in 2020 the tournament will be held Online starting July 25th.

The tournament was won by two out-of-state players who tied for 1st/2nd. And then William Marcelino (right) tied for 3rd and edged out last year's winner Shawn Hoshall on tie-breaks to win Top Virginian for 2019 and will represent VA in the 2020 National tournament. Congrats (!) and "best-of-luck" to William in representing the Ol' Dominion in the Online tournament!
