** COVID PROTOCOLS **
During This Transition Period from the Pandemic, the Following are
Implemented Regardless of More Open State, Local or Hotel Policies.

** Total Participants: Limited to 30 Total Players **

** As a Continued Precaution, Within the Tournament Hall:
Any player showing any sign of sickness will be withdrawn;
All boards, sets and clocks will be provided! Do not bring/use your equipment;
All playing material will be cleaned between rounds (time scheduled for such);
Masking required (unless both players at a board agree otherwise);
Distancing implemented between boards;
ZERO unregistered spectators allowed in the tournament hall;
No food allowed - No water stations provided;
Sanitzer and wipes available upon request;
No loitering once games are finished.**

IMPORTANT: While this tournament is limited to players born on or before 7/10/1971 (i.e. 50+ years of age), please note that it is also open to players from ANY state.

MAIN TOURNAMENT DESCRIPTION: There is 1 Open Section. 5-round tournament. Time Controls (mixed): Sat Rd 1 G/60, d5; Rds 2-3 G/90, d5; Sun Rds 4-5 G/90, d5. Entry Fee: $60-70. Prizes: See below. Rounds Times: Saturday: 10:00am, 1pm, and 5pm; Sunday: 10:00am and 2:00pm. Each player will be allowed to take one half-point bye if declared before the start of Round 2.

All players must be USCF members, no exceptions!

CORRECTION: All boards, sets and clocks will be provided! Do NOT bring your own chess equipment!


PRIZES: There are $1,000 in Guaranteed Prizes!!

Prizes are: OPEN: $500-200-100; U2000: $100; U1600: $100.

Top Virginian wins: FREE ENTRY to 2022 VA Senior Open!

Top Virginian also wins: FREE ENTRY to 2021 National Senior Tournaments of Champions! This is an Invitational tournament open to the winners of a State Senior Championship. The winner also receives a $500 stipend from VCF to attend this tournament.

Standard USCF tie-breaks will be used for non-cash prizes (free entries).

ON-LINE ENTRY FEE: $60

Pre-registration by ON-LINE ENTRY: Using the 'Register Here' button above, please fill out the form with the player's relevant information and submit payment using the secure payment platform. On-line pre-entries will be accepted until 12 midnight, July 9th (Friday). Thereafter, entries will be taken at the tournament site only (see 'On-Site Entry Fee' below).


ON-SITE ENTRY FEE: $70

Regular ON-SITE Registration will be accepted at the tournament: Saturday 9:00 - 9:50am.

If you choose this option, note that to avoid delaying the start of early rounds, ANY last-second on-site registrations MAY subject that player to an automatic 1st round "bye" or out of the ordinary pairings (i.e. a pairing with opponents with significantly higher/lower ratings).

Non-VA Players: The tournament is open to any non-VA players over age 50. Non-VA players can win any prize except the Free Entries to the VA Senior Open and the National Senior Tournaments of Champions.

VA Players: All VA residents must have a current VCF membership ( $15 ) which can be purchased on-site or through pre-registration. Players forgetting to purchase VCF membership during the pre-registration process will be reminded to do so at the tournament.

DIRECTIONS:
Generally, this location is easily accessed from the Dulles Toll Road VA-267 which is fed by either I-66 (from DC) or I-495/beltway. As you near the Airport, take the exit for Aviation Drive. Turn right at the top of the ramp. The hotel is the first right a couple of hundred yards down the road. And if needed, there is a shuttle from the airport.

SUMMARY: 2021 OPEN

TOP VIRGINIAN: John Farrell won the title as Top Virginian for 2020-2021 on tiebreaks with 3 others. John receives a free entry into both the 2021 National Senior Tournaments of Champions (invitational tournament for the top senior from each state) and the 2022 VA Senior Open.

The 2021 National tournament is set to occur at the end of this month from July 31st - Aug 3rd 2021 and as part of the 2021 US Open chess tournament.

While the COVID pandemic delayed this year's Virginia tournament from last fall, in the future this tournament will be rescheduled to occur in early June with the state champion or an alternate to participate in the national tournament two months later at the end of July.

COVID protocols were enforced this year out of an abundance of caution, including distancing and masking. Masking was required but an exception was allowed at each board and only upon agreement by both players.

The top 2 photos show the 1st and 2nd place winners (both from out-of-state) Tegshsuren Enkhbat and Oladapu Adu playing each other to a draw in Round 4.
