General Information:

The club’s focus online will continue to be to provide a strong competitive and/or learning experience for all participants. To maintain this club standard, most of our online events will be organized exclusively for players with USCF memberships, essentially over-the-board (OTB) players. As with the regular club, most of our online club events are open to any USCF player of any age and ability.

To begin with, the club will offer members an Online-Ladder (G/90+30) and Online-Quick-Quads (G/20+10), both on Friday evening. Players enter one or the other option, not both. Both are free with membership; in addition, members get $5-10 discounts on these other events.

These two weekly club events will start most Fridays at 7:00pm sharp!

Future Tournaments:

Soon the club will offer other monthly tourneys, as well as simuls, lectures, and prize tournaments. At least once a month, ACC will aim to offer a USCF online Blitz tournament (a 5-round double-blitz tourney playing each opponent twice, once as white and once as black), a USCF online Quick tournament (a 5-round G/30+15 tourney), the return of the multi-day ACC Club Championship (4-5 games, likely G/90+30), and other online big prize multi-day tournaments.
In addition to the free Friday Ladder and Friday Quad games, members get $5-10 discounts on these and other club events.

Simultaneous Exhibitions & Lectures:

Unlike our past in-person events, the usual lecture and simul events will not be held jointly but separated either morning/afternoon or into two days. Local and visiting Grand Masters and Masters usually provide an hour lecture and later take on all challengers for a modest fee. Play against and learn from some of the world's strongest players!!

Zoom:

All ACC lectures and online tournaments that award cash prizes will also require players to participate using the Zoom video meeting website. This will allow our TDs to monitor player behavior and activity during their games. Players will be required to use the camera in their laptops or obtain a separate camera for use in our online tournaments. Use of cameras throughout each game is required for any player to obtain a prize after any tournament. Full information will be provided for tournaments with cash prizes.

MEMBERSHIPS:

In order to participate in the ACC Online club, all players must have each of the following:

  • An active ACC Membership,
  • An active USCF Membership,

"Fair Play" System (chess.com) and Anti-Cheating Rules:

Cheating in chess is a serious concern. ACC has zero-tolerence for cheating of any type or collusion to fix game results.

The issue is magnified online, where tournament directors have to observe play and analyze all games. The good news is that Chess.com has invested heavily in their system to catch the cheaters. They have continually improved their system to further ensure games are played fairly and with a level of analysis making online play as safe as possible from cheating. USCF has extensively reviewed and approved the Fair Play system for USCF online-rated events and games.

Details on Fair Play System

Practically speaking, Chess.com’s sophisticated and proven Fair Play system will monitor all games both in real-time and in post-event analysis. Such analysis will include, but not be limited to, comparing moves played to the recommendations of various chess engines. ACC tournaments, particularly those with more than nominal cash prizes, will also be conducted with every player using Zoom thereby allowing moment-to-moment and move-to-move live monitoring of all players by a tournament director.

All Ladder or tournament entrants agree to play without cheating or colluding on games in any manner. With entry, all players agree any and all games will be submitted for analysis by the Chess.com Fair Play system and to abide by the findings of the Fair Play System.

For events with prizes, there will be at least a 72-hour period immediately after the event for the Fair Play system to conduct its review of all games. No prizes will be awarded until after this review period is concluded and any independently requested reviews are finalized. The full process can take up to a week or more for prizes to be awarded.

Players caught cheating in general and/or players with games found to violate the Fair Play System and the USCF rules of chess will be subject to any and all of the following penalties:

1) any USCF penalty deemed appropriate by the Chief TD,
2) game result(s) overturned (opponent’s results changed**),
3) ejection from tournament,
4) prize forfeited,
5) banned from Chess.com website,
6) banned from future online and/or OTB ACC club play and tournament participation,
7) player reported to USCF Ethics Committee (possible suspension of USCF membership).

** for opponents: for non-prize games, any loss or draw becomes a forfeit win. For games in tournaments with prizes, any loss becomes a half-point draw, and any draw becomes a forfeit win. This is a new ACC rule for online club events only.

Membership Payment Options (ACC & USCF)

ACC Memberships:

All ACC online club participants must have an existing and active ACC club membership.

ACC membership provides for free entry in the Friday Ladder and Quads as well as $5-10 discounts on all other events, including lectures, simuls, and prize tournaments (Blitz, Action, championsips, and large multi-day tournaments).

With the new online club, there are two memberships to choose from. Players only need the online membership to play online. Existing regular memberships will be honored and cover online play through their end date.

The new online club membership rate is $40 for all members, youth and seniors included.
The normal in-person club membership rate is still $60 (for seniors and kids) and $75 (for adults).

Members only pay for one or the other membership, not both. Expired ACC memberships need to be renewed in order to participate in the online ACC club. As usual, all memberships are annual and run from the date joined to that date the following year.

When the club returns for in-person club meetings and tournaments, members with active online memberships will have them honored through their end date, but, these memberships will have to be upgraded to a regular in-person membership.

Extension of Existing ACC Memberships:
All existing regular in-person ACC memberships will be extended by 6 months to account for club inactivity during the COVID pandemic. “Existing” is defined as regular ACC memberships having expired on or after March 31, 2020. This will make members “whole” for club inactivity. Any regular membership expiring before this date, or after this date plus the 6 six months, will need to be renewed in full and at least at the online rate in order for members to participate in online activity.

Since we are providing a wide variety of online options for chess events which will continue until the regular club reopens, this will be the only extension to the regular in-person membership end date.

Example: A regular membership expires August 15, 2020. The player will have an ACC online membership that expires February 15, 2021. At which point they will have to at least renew at the online rate to continue to participate online.

When COVID Ends ... : When the club reopens in our new location post-COVID emergency for in person meetings and over-the-board play, those with online memberships can have it applied to their regular ACC membership if they choose to do so. At that time, existing online membership end-dates will be adjusted by a transition rate ($40 off the existing in-person club rate) and adjusted with a transition end-date (rounded-up in monthly blocks of time). Anyone with more than 6 months on their online membership will also get an additional 50% off the annual club rate.

Example 1: under current rates, a new online junior/child member (under age 19) wants to joins the regular ACC club 8 months into their online membership. They will pay $20 (60-40) and the regular club membership will end 4 months later.

Example 2: under the current rates, a new online adult member joins the regular ACC club 3 months into their online membership. They will pay $17.50 [(75-40)/2)] and the regular club membership will end 9 months later.

Chess.com Memberships:

ACC will use Chess.com to host most of our online club activities. All ACC online club participants must have an active Chess.com membership, at any level. Provide your Chess.com username and membership level upon joining the club and with tourney registration. Each player will join the ACC Online Club on Chess.com to participate in tournaments and other events.

It is only necessary to have a regular membership (non-premium, no cost). Other Premium Chess.com memberships (Gold, Platinum and Diamond) are available for an annual cost ($29, $49, $99). You can also pay for these on a monthly basis (total payment divided into 12 installments payable month to month).

Chess.com premium memberships provide increased access to regular as well as paid features (including Puzzles, the Puzzle Rush tactics game, Lessons, Videos, Game Report & Analysis, Retry Mistakes, and more).

Unlike other systems, Chess.com also utilizes a proven anti-cheating feature that oversees all games. This Fair Play detection system can identify players getting assistance from chess-engines or other illegal resources, even if they are just used in the middle of a game. This Fair Play system will allow ACC to award cash prizes for relevant events.
